We are approaching the end of the year and may be thinking about gifts and new diaries. Even though we can find the date quickly on our phones, it is nice to have a calendar to remind us of the days and the passing of the seasons.
You might like to create your own calendar combining writing and art work. We’ll start the project with a bit of playfulness, inspired by the German poet, Christian Morgenstern. Here are his names for the months of the year:
The Names of the Months Jaguary Cassowary Marten Mandrill Maybird Coon Shoofly Locust Serpent bear Octopus North Pole bear Remem ber Christian Morgenstern
You could echo the sounds of the months as he has done. Or you could make up names that reflect what you know about each month as George Ellis did:
Snowy, Flowy, Blowy, Showery, Flowery, Bowery, Hoppy, Croppy, Droppy, Breezy, Sneezy, Freezy.
