For those of us in school, the summer holidays are beginning. For those of us who have been at home for most of the last five months, summer holidays take on a new meaning. We are still in the same place. There are no lessons, but we are still here. How could we mark the summer holidays?
We could start by making a list! One of the great things about writing is that it can be a kind of thinking. It helps us work things out. It helps us discover new ideas, even when we thought we didn’t have any.
We suggest that you make a list of things that you would like to do, be, feel, try out, achieve, aim for, discover in the next few weeks. I was going to say, ‘be realistic’. There is no point making a list of things that you feel that you will miss out on. And then, I thought, no, start by making the longest, craziest, loveliest list you can think of. And if, like some friends of mine, you are not able to go to Disneyland as planned, you can put that down -but then let your writing hand invent what you can do instead. Maybe you could set up a theme park in your garden, or your bedroom … or you could make a comic using your favourite characters … or … perfect your hula hooping skills or …
Think about small things. Kind things. Maybe you could set out to do at least one kind thing every day. Maybe you could have a personal challenge -but be kind to yourself too. Try not to set impossible goals. Perhaps your main aim is to have an interesting summer. Make a list of things that you could do that would make it interesting for you. Happy list-making!
