Shape game

Sometimes the best ideas for writing come from drawing. When you start drawing you find that words start popping into your head and suddenly you’ve built a whole picture, a whole story. I’ve been reading a book called ‘Flights of Fancy’, which was actually a present from Jeni (she’s very good at choosing books). There are contributions from the first ten Children’s Laureates and one of them is Anthony Browne who tells us how to do a brilliant game called The Shape Game. Let’s play it!

You will need to borrow someone in your house for a minute or two and ask them very nicely to draw you an abstract shape at random. Once they’ve drawn a shape, your job is to look at the shape and transform it into something recognisable. In the first photo, you can see the black felt tip line is where my friend drew a shape and then all the colour is where I made the shape into something different. On the left you can see Bella the dancer, she likes knitted jumpers with elbow patches and has crazy yellow and pink hair. Next to Bella is the lesser spotted Glorapomp – an extremely rare and shy bird. You could have a go at drawing a shape for someone else too. You could write about the drawings you create – a description or even a whole story. Grab your felt tips or colouring pencils and get drawing!
