Fireworks

Here is a way to use the firework book [yesterday’s post].

Focus on sound. Make a list of onomatopoeic words that capture the sound of fireworks. Try to push beyond the usual words – bang and whoosh and screech – and invent some new words. Use consonants on their own – k k k k k k- or long lines of vowels eeeeeeeeeeee. Think about which consonants you might place in front of oo or ah.

You could stop with the list, but the next stage could be concrete poems of some kind, or a combination of words and drawing to create a firework display.

We used black paper to make a book and began with white pen to write sounds and to represent the shapes the fireworks might make in the sky.

Then we added some gold and silver.

Finally, we used pastels to add some colour.
