Firework book

Remember, remember, the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

Whether or not we remember the plot, people in England often have bonfires and fireworks around this time. Those of celebrating Diwali may also be letting off fireworks, so, today we’ll show you how to make a folded book which Paul Johnson describes as a firework book. (Paul Johnson (2005) Get Writing creative book-making projects for children ages 4 – 7. London: A&C Black).

This book form lends itself nicely to display of words and artwork. Here are the instructions. In the next few posts, we will give you some ideas about how we to use it.

You need two pieces of rectangular paper. We recommend A5 size, though you can make it larger.

  • Take the first piece of paper, portrait orientation. Fold a narrow margin at the bottom of the paper. Then fold the top edge down to meet the folded edge.
  • Fold in the corners of the top folded edge, about a third of the way in. Fold them back and forth to make them flexible.Unfold and crease the corners diagonally inwards.
  • Take another A5 sheet of paper and follow the first three steps. . Cut off the bottom margin.
  • Fold one side vertically at the point of the first diagonal crease. Cut the paper along the vertical and diagonal, as shown, to make two panels. They look like a simple house shape..
  • Glue the panels to the base sheet, placing the triangle at the top of the panel against the triangle made by the diagonal fold.
  • You can join several sheets together using the bottom folded margin. The sheets will fold together to make a flat booklet and open up to make a pretty display.
