Are you writing in your journal? How is it going?
Are you writing even though you don’t feel like it?
Sometimes you just need a way to break into the blank page.
Some teachers I know have a collection of sentence starters which children can
use to set their writing going. Sometimes it really is just a question of beginning to write,
seeing the words on the page. I think of a classroom where the teacher made a set of pockets
that she hung on the wall. The pockets held laminated strips, each with a sentence starter.
When children wrote in their journals, they were able to choose a starter strip if they wished.
Here are some suggestions. You and the children you work with will have plenty of other ideas.
I feel …
I think …
I wish …
I sometimes wonder …
Yesterday, …
I like …
I don’t like …
I remember …
Often …
My best …
I just want to say …
I would like …
