Don’t!

In the nineteenth century, women were allowed to go out cycling. It became a popular pastime.  It wasn’t all plain sailing, though. Women were expected to behave themselves and certainly not act in an unladylike way. . The New Times published a list of ‘Don’ts for women riders’.

Here are some examples from the list:

Don’t be a fright.

Don’t faint on the road.

Don’t wear a man’s cap.

Don’t cultivate a “bicycle face”.

Don’t “talk bicycle” at the table.

Don’t chew gum. Exercise your jaws in private.

Don’t wear a garden party hat with bloomers.

Don’t allow your dear little Fido to accompany you.

Don’t be up on ‘records” and “record smashing”. That is sporty.

You can find the full list here: https://www.brainpickings.org/2012/01/03/donts-for-women-on-bicycles-1895/

Try writing a list of ‘don’ts’. The list could be things that you are warned against doing or a list for teachers or dog walkers or little brothers. You could write a list for remote classroom behaviour  or going out for a walk.

Maybe you would rather be positive. Write a list of ‘do’s’, instead of ‘don’ts’. Your list may turn out to be satirical or comic. Play.
