Things I am not

This is an idea borrowed from the poet, Naomi Shihab Nye.  I used it in a workshop recently and we had a good time. We all wrote something quite different and intriguing and fun.

Write a list of things that you are not – an oak tree, a bus driver, an elephant, a Roman soldier, a grumbler ……

Now choose your favourite lines -one or more -and write more. Add a fuller description, precise details, flights of fancy. Naomi Shihab Nye encourages us to use metaphor, embellish, whatever you like.

A wise teacher friend of mine suggested that if you were writing with the youngest children this could be something you could do all together. Children give their ideas. You write the list. And you might start with ‘Things that I am …’  Just to be sure!
