Guess the vegetable

It’s quiz time! And, yes, more vegetables. I have been playing a game with my family. We have been looking at recipe books and reading out the  descriptions of vegetables. We try to guess what vegetable the cook is describing.

What vegetable do you think this is?

A fat round -???-  is used both as a candlelit ghoul at All Hallows and as a fairytale stagecoach to whisk Cinderella to the ball.  As summer slips into autumn, the -???’s skin starts to harden. It will keep its sweet flesh in sound enough condition till early spring -though whether it ends up as soup or a doorstop will depend on whether you can still get a knife through it.

And what about this:

??? are like little green bullets, lined up together in their own green purse. Zip them out of their purse and eat them raw, they are sweet and tasty. More often, they come from the freezer in big rumbly bags -useful as an ice-pack if you fall over and hurt your knee, just the vegetable to go with fish and chips.

These descriptions are a bit like riddles. Can you describe some vegetables -or fruit –  and see whether other people can guess what they are?
